Tackling distractions while building Software

The most common thing that any developer, be it junior or senior can face while trying to work. Distractions while crafting software at work!

Let’s try to break things down the old school way: The problem, the tactic, the solution; just like that.

So, let’s begin:

The problem:

It is common while working on a laptop or desktop computer to get distracted with random things. Things like YouTube, Social Media, popping up news items that you see in some links, googling random questions, etc.

This not only hampers the concentration but also makes it difficult to go back to the thing that you were working on.

The Tactic:

The most basic thing that you can do is turn off the notifications. Don’t enable notifications on your working computer in the first place. If there are any, turn them off.

If you are easily distracted by phone notifications, the easiest thing to do is to turn off your WiFi or cellular connection. Also, put the phone upside down and away from plain eyesight. Looking at the blank screen too makes you see if there is anything new!

If you are listening to music, try to keep the tunes where there are no lyrics in there. I have observed personally, that those songs bring random thoughts to your brain which make us google things or hamper the concentration.

Try not to open multiple tabs in the browser except when important.

Don’t keep older tabs open or those which are not related to the topic you are working on right now.

The outcome:

This may not be the best or easiest way to keep the distractions away but every little step counts and there maybe some level of improvement to the quality of work you produce in the certain time period.

Try these basic things, they may help a lot more than not trying those at all! 😉

Cheers!
